Seroquel side effects range from sedation to deadly diabetes
Defective drug Seroquel can produce good and bad side effects. On the good side, it can provide sedation for those with mental maladies such as schizophrenia, anxiety or bipolar disorders. In an off-label use, it also can help those suffering from insomnia to get some sleep. On the bad side, Seroquel can cause a coma or a potentially deadly diabetic condition.
Seroquel also has been shown to cause Tardive Dyskinesia, an incurable neurological disorder in which sufferers have constant twitches, tics and spasms, with an inability to control their muscles fully. The drug also can lead to blood-sugar disorders and diabetes, which can be a fatal disease.
Seroquel also may cause cataracts in users. However, while it's believed this can happen with humans, it's been proven so far only to affect beagles in a study involving dogs.
Long-term use of Seroquel has been shown to cause permanent and irreversible damage to the brain's dopamine receptors, which are neurotransmitters.
Common side effects of Seroquel which aren't as severe include dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, drowsiness, sore throat, hotheadedness, nasal congestion, an upset stomach or stomach pain, weariness, weakness, weight gain and vomiting. Such side effects do not necessarily require medical treatment. These can come from Seroquel or from Seroquel XR Sustained-Release tablets.
Besides diabetes, far more serious side effects also can include a rash, trouble breathing, chest tightness, fainting, an irregular heartbeat, chills, fever and swelling of the face, mouth, tongue or lips. Other side effects which may necessitate medical attention include persistent sore throat, seizures, memory loss, muscle pain, increased sweating, increased saliva production or drooling, depression, panic attacks, tingling, numbness, sustained headaches, high blood sugar symptoms and uncontrolled muscle movements, which also can be called Tardive Dyskinesia.
